Past International Projects:

AIDS in Africa:

In November 2006, the focus at The River was on AIDS in Africa.  The campaign entitled “Promise for Africa”, raised awareness and funds to the struggle many Africans face fighting HIV/AIDS, and the complications this brings to their ongoing development struggles.

As part of our focus, The River partnered with two organizations:

The Stephen Lewis Foundation, run by Canadian Stephen Lewis, the United Nation’s former ambassador for AIDS in Africa.  Our support helped to fund ongoing work done by his foundation in a variety of African countries.

The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC), which is the relief and development organization of the Christian Reformed denomination (of which The River belongs).  Our support helped CRWRC continue its programming to combat the impacts of HIV/AIDS at the community level, and its tendency to undermine existing development achievements.

The River presented a comprehensive campaign that touched on various aspects of the issue, including:

-producing and distributing 1000 DVDs that highlight the problem of HIV/AIDS in Africa, to raise awareness at the public level

-invite CRWRC’s East and Southern African expert on HIV/AIDS to speak on challenges and hope based on her personal experiences with the pandemic

-SERVE leaders, Tracy and Ian, gave a message that places HIV/AIDS and Africa’s underdevelopment in the context of the West’s influences - namely Aid, Trade and Debt.
