This spirit flows from the same belief that motivated Daniel to defy his king by praying three times a day; namely, that God is in control and that because our lives are in His capable hands, we need not fear even death. As such, would be Christ followers today are called to live with the same degree of boldness and courage as they fearlessly love the world in Jesus name.

Nebuchadnezzar was the great king. His Hanging Gardens were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote, In addition to its size, Babylon surpasses in splendour any city in the known world, and Nebuchadnezzar built it. But, Nebuchadnezzar had a problem. He thought he was god. Through a series of somewhat strange events, God taught Nebuchadnezzar his real place in the universe. Today, we still struggle with sin of human pride and arrogance. Many of us are still building our own personal kingdoms. The gift of Nebuchadnezzars story and subsequently the story of Jesus is to give us proper perspective as human beings and to teach us humility.

King Nebuchadnezzar had a problem. He has lots of wise men, but no real wisdom. What he needed was revelationoa word from God as to the meaning and direction of his life. God used Daniel to provide just such a word and in the end it brought the king of Babylon to his knees before the power of living God. Similarly, we live in an age glutted with information, yet grievously lacking wisdom. What we need is a word from the Lord. What we need is revelation as to the meaning and direction of life.

Contrary to popular opinion, the book of Daniel is not a childrens story. In fact, it asks a very adult question; namely, how does one who knows and loves God live in exile? How do you serve God and bring a blessing to the world when it seems as if those who oppose God are holding all the cards? This is the situation that Daniel and his friends found themselves in as captives in Babylon. Curiously, this is also the situation that we find ourselves in as Christ followers and as a church in an increasingly pagan culture. The answer, as it turns out, involves realizing that we can still live transformative lives and bring the blessing of Gods truth to our culture. The purpose of this series is to reflect on some of these transformative truths and blessings. The first, from Daniel chapter 1, is embracing an alternative and healthy way of life.

And the law, as revealed to Moses on Mt. Sinai, is the re-publication of these boundaries. Joyfully learning to live within these boundaries is part of the good news Jesus came to bring.
